Samantha is a 23-year-old female, she is better known by her friends as Sam or Sammy. She is 5ft 1” is of a healthy weight she’s a size 10/12 in clothing, however she feels different, have you seen those women on Instagram? Why can’t she look like them? Sam has a very basic wardrobe with the odd ‘quirky’ item to jazz things up every now and then. She lives at home in her parents’ in 4 bedroom semi-detached house in Laceby. Darren (father, 47) has his own successful gardening business working with clients in the high-end areas of Waltham and Scartho whilst Natalie (mother, 46) is a primary school teacher at their local school and has been working there since she was 18 (starting as a teaching assistant and working her way up). And Debbie, how could Sam forget about Debbie! Her older sister Debbie (25) is married to Joseph West (engineer) they have a little girl (Jessie, 2) Debbie owns her hairdressing business where she has just bought a salon, business is booming. Mum and Dad idolise Debbie, she’s everything they every wanted, she has a first-class BSc (hons) in Business Management at the University of Derby, she has a house (just up the road from her mum and dad), she’s married, she has a child, the list goes on… Sam is often told to take a leaf out of her sister’s book by her relatives. Although Sam never resents Debbie for this, in fact they are very close and often comes to her older sister for advice.
Sam has a 2:1 BSc (hons) in Business and Management from the University of Bradford, her mum and dad are so proud of her for completing her degree, well they would be since they insisted she went. Sam is currently working a 9-5 job at JobCentre Plus as a business administrator, she has been working there for around a year now. She absolutely hates her job but after being out of work for a year once she finished her degree, working there is better than nothing, at least it keeps her grandparents of her back about being unemployed, remember ‘These kids today are bone idle, they want to get off their arse and get a job! In my day you couldn’t be a lazy bastard you got a job, and you made a career out of it!' However, Sam’s real passion is creative writing, ever since school when she joined a book club Sam was hooked, but her parents always said there was no money in it, so hence the push for a career in business. All Sam ever wanted to do was become an author, she has drafted a book, put it will never go any further, Sam lacks confidence in her capabilities and does not want to upset her parents by pursuing a career they don’t agree with.
On the weekends Sam likes to go out and party, often she goes with a couple of girls from the gym as her best friends are too busy. With being single she often finds herself mingling with the men and women in the club and has the occasional fling but nothing ever serious. Sam isn’t ready to settle down as she is unsure what she wants so getting married and have children of her own is not a priority, but her mum and nana seem to think different. With her multiple sexual encounters, granddad makes it very clear that he is not impressed by what he calls ‘Shenanigans and she needs to stop being the town bike, or she’ll never find a man, because men do not want used goods.’, little does he know it is women as well. This loud exterior Sam portrays when she’s out is completely the opposite to her actual self, Sam is an introverted character, she is sensitive, longs for deep connection and has battled with depression since she was 18, the therapist suggested her bottling of emotions being a main reason for this, Sam on the other hand thinks that’s a load of shit and it’s in fact she has no clue what she is supposed to be doing with her life. When Sam is not partying, you can find her in her local library, Sam loves to read. She loves all kinds of books: crime, horror, romance… Her favourite book is Into the Water by Paula Hawkins, the thrill of the novel keeps on her seat the whole time, a little bit of an escapism from what Sam describes as ‘her boring life’.
Sam’s friends are beginning to settle down, Rosie (Sam’s best friend since secondary school) has just got engaged and has bought a house with her partner Ross. Her other friend Jasmin has just graduated from the University of Manchester with a first class MSc in Chemistry and has been offered a PhD with some company in Manchester, of course she accepted. Sam however, feels stuck… her friends seem to be getting on with life, her parents constantly pushing her to do what they think is best, her grandparent’s stuck in their boomer ways!
Life feels so much harder than it was back then… we are facing massive unemployment rates, an ever-increasing population, climate change and global warming, unobtainable beauty standards, cost of living crisis, the impossible property ladder, social media saturation of propaganda, social division being deeper than ever…
And Sam does not know what to do…
