POSITIONS AND PRACTICE

Module Introduction

This module enables you to locate your practice within the broad contexts of professional contemporary photography. You will consider the importance of research as a basis for academic and industry contexts and critically reflect on core themes in contemporary visual culture. You will explore ideas, test assumptions and develop your own informed critical perspectives.
Throughout the course you will develop a research project. The first module constitutes the ‘initial research’ phase of this. As you progress through the module you will identify areas of interest and concerns, and establish some research questions and aims to explore through your photographic practice during the course.
Through discursive activities with faculty staff and peers, as well as self-directed research and personal reflection, you will discuss and analyse your practice in relation to specific themes, and articulate your practical and conceptual motivations and intentions as an image-maker.
We will look at the nature of an effective photographic practice, as a rationalised synthesis of theory and technique, and consider the importance of analysis as a key tool to developing a reflective, adaptive and resilient practice.
